Tuesday 10/1/13

Good Morning, I am out of school today with the golf team at sectionals.  Here is the plan for today.....

1. List #3 Vocab Quiz
2. Practice FRQ on Cells and Cell Membrane (timed 20 minutes, we will go over this on Wednesday)
3. The rest of the day will be catch up day.  Mrs. Finicle will be the sub and she will pass out review packets for the test on Thursday over chapters 4-5.  There are also practice problems on the back lab counter (these are for your practice)  We will review and go over these problems on Wednesday.  I would also review the end of the chapter questions for chapters 4-5.  Don't forget your biozones! The test on Thursday will be MC, Matching, Grid In and 4 FRQ (3 short and 1 long)

Here is what you need for your lab report on diffusion....The lab report is going to be based off of the 4 part
"Wards" Lab we did last Thursday and Friday.  This lab report will be an individual effort.

Purpose
Variables
Experimental Hypothesis
Data/Graphs: All data from parts A-C, Microscope part D, is all about discusion of changes
Analysis: Just Parts A-D
Conclusion:  This is where you will talk about the other labs (egg fountain, decalcified egg, etc)
Applications to Real Life: Remember this is where you relate the ideas of Diffusion....ALL OF THEM...to biology. Dont forget all the parts of Diffusion that we discussed Passive to Active.
Big Ideas: All 4 ideas are involved, do not forget the organelles from chapter 4.

Lab Report Due Wednesday 10/9.  Last day for me to read the labs for review will be Monday 10/7 at 3:30, NO EXCEPTIONS

Also, I have put the post lab analysis questions and their due dates on the bulletin board under the periodic table.  Please do not remove them from class.

TUESDAY IS AN EXCELLENT CHANCE FOR YOU TO GET CAUGHT UP, HOWEVER YOU ARE ALL ADULTS AND HAVE TO MAKE DECISIONS!!!

Enzyme Lab Report

You guys have done a GREAT job working on your enzyme labs over the past few days.   Remember these labs are due Tuesday, but...."DON'T TURN IN CRAP" if you need a few extra hours to finish your best effort please do so.  Those who abuse this privilege will make it cause more strict deadlines in the near future.  GOOD LUCK!

Intro to cells

The next unit will be covering the cells and the cellular transport.  You will need to know the function and location of the organelles (one of you quizzes).  This will allow us to go through and begin to look at how cells carry out the processes of life.

Homework for Monday 9/16: Read p 60-67 in Mader

All Biozones will be in the Green WKBK for this unit.  Leave the Orange WKBK one in you locker/home.

Organelle Quiz Thursday 9/19
 Matching (4 matching sections 1. Prokaryotic/Eukaryotic 2. EndoMembrane Organelles 3. Energy/Protein synthesis organelles 4. Membrane Proteins)

Chapter 4 Read pg 70-81 You are responsible for the functions of the organelles.  We will not go over slides of each of there functions

Green Biozone "DUE before Thursday's Quiz"
37-41 (Eukaryotic v Prokaryotic Cells)
43-45, 47-49 (Organelles)
46 Cell Processes

Chapter 5 Membranes

Do's and Don'ts for the Enzyme Lab

* Be certain to discuss WHY no reaction takes place when the concentration of enzyme/substrate is zero (analysis section)
* Discuss 3 minute MAX if any of your trials reached that point and what that would say about your results.
* Connections/Application to Real Life, Big Ideas (all 4!!) and Inquiry/lab extension portions of lab are combined worth 50% of lab. DO NOT SKIMP ON THESE SECTIONS.
* Connections/Applications to Real Life: this section is meant to allow you to expand on the concepts of enzymes that were not tested during this lab (denaturing, enzyme/substrate complex, coenzymes, inhibitors etc) that are crucial to the complete understanding of the enzymes.
* Inquiry lab: Choose one variable to manipulate and include all parts of the experiment. (see chapter 1 and/or the worksheet on scientific experiments I gave you when you designed the water lab)

To be continued....

Biozones and Readings

Several students have asked me when the Biozones are "due".  The purpose of the biozone pages are to allow you to review.  You should be spending about 20 minutes a day on the biozones.  I STRONGLY SUGGEST that you read the pages before the day the topics are discussed in class.  The Biozone pages should be done 1-2 days before the Unit exam.   We will spend time in class reviewing the biozone pages/questions that will help you review for the unit exam.

Water Properties Lab

I will collect the water properties lab parts 1-5 tomorrow (wednesday) in class.  If your group is struggling with part 6, "Don't turn in crap" and see me tomorrow for more guidance. I will accept them until Friday.
